If you have learners who need extra practice with blending and/or reading words with prefixes, you’ll love these NO PREP Prefixes Fluency Games. They are formatted for both print AND digital learning.
Description
These NO PREP Prefixes Fluency Games can help your learners practice fluency with these prefixes: un, re, dis, mis, ex, in {two meanings}, im, il, pre, fore, sub, under, en, and em.
One important part of fluent reading is automaticity, or the ability to recognize words without a lot of effort or time needed.
And that’s the part of fluency these games are working towards…the ability to recognize words with prefixes quickly.
Prefixes Fluency Games
No one loves drilling and killing a love of learning with boring worksheets. That’s why I’ve hidden the drills behind the idea of a game. Come on now. You know you’ve used this trick before, too!
Instead of playing these no prep prefixes fluency games as learners would usually play a regular board game {rolling a die, moving to a space, and reading just the one word part in that space}, learners go back to “Start” and read every word in each space until they get to the space they landed on each time they roll! {See the game board above.}
This gives learners much more practice with reading words with prefixes.
These games are for 1-4 players, although I would recommend aiming towards less players instead of more so they get more time playing and practicing fluency.
In this PDF download, you’ll find:
- Links to Google Slides and Seesaw, with directions for using Google Slides with Microsoft OneDrive
- Fluency games in color AND in blackline
- Fluency games in print font AND type font
- Prefixes fluency games for:
- un {2 games}
- re {2 games}
- mis, dis {2 games}
- fore, pre {2 games}
- under, sub {2 games}
- il, in, im {2 games}
- in, ex {2 games}*
- en, em {2 games}*
- Mixed Review {4 games}
- That’s a total of 20 games, as the print font and type font games are different.
*Disclaimer: While MOST words in these games follow the prefix + base word pattern, some words in these games do not. For example, preschool follows the pattern with pre = the prefix and school = the base word, but words like exit do not follow the pattern. I recommend pointing out these words out ahead of time so learners will not be confused by them.
